How To Style a Casual LBD

LBD

Hello, loves! Today I wanted to talk about a staple item in every girl’s closet, the trusty little black dress (or LBD). The LBD makes it’s mark by being the safety net in your closet. Have an event and you don’t know what to wear? Your LBD will be right there waiting for you, like a great BFF. But just because your LBD is (most often) a safe bet, does not mean that it needs to be a boring outfit.

Yesterday was a beautiful spring day, here in California! After our morning jog, my boyfriend and I attended church and then went on a double date for brunch. It was an all around beautiful Sunday! But that morning, I found myself in one of those tricky styling situations. I wanted to be dressed up enough for church, but casual enough for a meal with friends. That’s when my LBD came to mind! I grabbed my little black dress, made from cotton, and began to style it.

The key to styling a casual look with your LBD is to embellish. A LBD is just a plain black dress, until you make it your own. So add some flare! Personally, I love anything and everything bohemian, so I added my necklace from Nigeria and some large beaded hoop earrings. Adding your favorite jewelry will really help represent your true style.

Next, I love wearing black with cognac. I think that the black really makes the cognac pop! So I threw on my favorite gladiator sandals and matched them with my purse. These two pieces, along with my jewelry and denim jacket, brightened up my outfit and made it great for Spring. I wore my denim jacket because I love to layer, and wanted to take away from how tight the dress was. Finally, I threw on my REKS Optics sunnies, and was ready to go!

So make sure to stay true to you when you’re styling your LBD casual look. The key is to feel comfy and confident!

Greetings From…

They say “Home is where the heart is”, and I could not agree more. Currently, I am California dreaming with the mountains in view, and a clear blue sky overhead. But even though I am loving my new home in the West Coast, a piece of my heart will always be in the East Coast, where I was born and raised. I believe that everyone should step out of their comfort zone, and discover who they are by exploring the world. However, I also think that remembering where you came from can be incredibly grounding.

For twenty-four years, I lived in a small town just north of Boston. I grew up doing all the things New Englanders love to do…

~eating a healthy Sunday breakfast, consisting only of Dunkin Donuts

~going on road trips though out New England, that really don’t take that long at all

~eating all the seafood I could get my hands on

~apple picking in the fall

~attending sporting events (we really do have the best teams)

and

~visiting beach towns

(just to name a few things)

After attending college in Vermont, I fell in love with a boy and his dog, and quickly moved to Boston with them. We lived together in the city for three years. During that time, I discovered a new-found love for Boston. There are restaurants rich with culture, districts that radiate with history, and parks that provide plenty of nature. To this day, there is nothing like running along the Charles River with my GSD.

While I love my new home and creating new experiences, little memories tend to sneak up on me and remind me of my roots. I welcome these moments, and hold on to them tightly. Because of this, I carry with me objects that remind me of New England. This is exactly why I love my Greetings From Map tote. I found this Spartina 449 tote at The Paper Store, and could not be happier with this bag. This large tote is of great quality and holds all my daily essentials and more. It features a beautiful map illustrating the Northeastern Harbors with beaches, rolling waves, and sea creatures. The tote has splashes of white, blue, and orange – which is one of my favorite color combinations. This nautical bag is a great reminder that you can take the girl out of New England, but you can’t take New England out of the girl. Whether I’m on the West Coast or the East Coast, I am thankful for The Paper Store keeping me stylish, and reminding this New Englander turned Californian of where she came from.

Side Note: I thought it was important to note that this Greetings From Map tote comes from a collection, and there are other locations featured. Hello, September!

There is no one out there more excited for fall than me! It is my all-time favorite season. Between the foliage, apple picking, pumpkin spice flavoring, back-to-school, and fashion…what’s not to love?
I know that this season every one is loving on maroon, however, I cannot get enough of olive green! Maybe I am a little bias; my favorite color is green. This month I am craving some new green pieces for my closet! Here are just a couple items that I am crushing on…
Top left: Vest from Nordstrom. Top Right: Scarf from Express. Bottom Left: Moccasins from Minnetonka/Amazon. Bottom Right: Satchel from Coach

Top Left: Watch from Fossil. Top Right: Sweater from Express. Bottom Left: Dress from Express. Bottom Right: Booties from DSW.
Hopefully some of these pieces will make their way into my closet. However, I do have a beautiful olive green skirt from Express that I have been receiving many compliments on.
I absolutely love this outfit! Originally I was going to wear my faded-wash denim shirt, but the weather was just too beautiful that day. This olive green skirt is perfect for both nannying and working retail. It is long enough to be appropriate, but wraps at the side and moves with you. The wrap makes the skirt have a little something extra, and the material makes it casual enough to work with children. For my day at Express, I wore a crop top, however, for nannying I would wear a tight basic tee, tucked in.
This skirt is also perfect for the transition from summer to fall! It looks great with a crop top and flats for a casual sunny day; or wedges for a fun night out. It will also look nice with booties and a light sweater for those breezy fall days. I loved this versatile skirt so much that I bought it in plum as well!
My necklace is from Nigeria. My sunglasses are from Marshalls. My crop top is from Express. My skirt is from Express. It is not sold in olive green anymore but can be found in plum and black. My Lucky Brand shoes are from Marshalls. My tote is from Tory Burch. I have the smaller tote. The larger one is the only one available at this time. My headband is from So Good Jewelry. My watch is from Fossil. My denim shirt is from Express.
I hope you are as excited for fall as I am! As always, thanks for stopping by Cute Teachings!
